Why He Gave Out Rosaries
For Louis de Montfort, the Rosary was not just a prayer; it was a powerful tool for spiritual renewal, conversion, and community.
He actively gave out and promoted Rosaries for several distinct reasons:
Spiritual Weapon for the Poor
He preached at a time when many ordinary peasants were uneducated and illiterate. He gave them the Rosary because it allowed them to deeply contemplate the life of Jesus Christ and Mary without needing to read complex theological books.
Fighting Spiritual Apathy
He used the Rosary to revive parishes that had grown cold in their faith. He would establish “Rosary Confraternities”; in every town he visited, encouraging people to form small groups to pray the Rosary together daily.
The Concept of “Spiritual Slaves of Mary”
He popularized a form of total consecration to Jesus through Mary. He taught that by carrying and praying the Rosary, believers were physically and spiritually uniting themselves to Christ through his Mother.
He even encouraged people to wear small chains or carry their Rosaries visibly as a sign of this beautiful lifelong commitment.
